Day 4

Subject: Get the right vitamins and minerals, [firstname].

Hi [firstname],

When you're eating a healthy diet (like we talked about yesterday) you'll be getting a large chunk of your essential vitamins and minerals from your food. Zinc, folate, iron, selenium, copper, and vitamins A, C, D, E, B6, and B12 are all vital nutrients your immune system needs to do its job effectively.

Let's take a look at some of them…

Vitamin D is often associated with the healthy development of bones, joints and muscles. It does much more than that, though. Research has shown that Vitamin D adapts our immune responses, and that a deficiency can trigger autoimmune conditions and susceptibility to infections.

Zinc is known to be an important "micronutrient" for the immune system, and a deficiency can result in an impaired immune response. Research published in the Journal of Family Practice suggests that zinc can reduce the severity and duration of colds. Zinc can be found in plenty of foods, including seafood, meat, beans and pulses.

B vitamins – especially B6, B9 (Folic Acid) and B12 (Thiamine) – have been found to play a role in your body's immune system. A deficiency in them can alter the response of the immune system and inhibit the body's ability to make antibodies, white blood cells and other immune factors it needs to fight off infection.

Omega 3s are integral parts of the membranes that surround each cell in your body. There are three forms of omega 3 fatty acids – EPA, DHA and ALA. ALA in particular is an "essential" fatty acid, which means it must be consumed and cannot be made by the body.

It's best to get most of your vitamins and minerals from food (as nature intended), but you should also take supplements, too. This is especially important as you get older and your body becomes less efficient at processing this stuff. Buy supplements from a health food store or online as these tend to be better quality and offer higher doses than the supermarket type.

Warmly,

[Your Name].
